B Street from Foothill Boulevard down to the BART station, with Mission Boulevard and the short cross streets: shops and restaurants at the sidewalk, apartments on the floors above them, the city lots, the BART garage, and a second run of calls once the kitchens close.

The slope above downtown along Upper B Street and the streets off it: houses from the 1900s through the 1930s with deep porches and mortise sets in the door edge, long-owned homes, back cottages and divided upstairs units, narrow streets and short driveways on a grade.

The blocks between Jackson Street and Mission Boulevard: duplexes and small houses on quiet streets, families who have been here for decades beside units that turn over on a lease, back cottages, driveways shared by two front doors, and the neighborhood the van waits in between calls.

The flat grid west of Mission around the old cannery: rows of 1950s tract houses with the garage facing the street, original builder hardware on a good many of them, the cannery blocks rebuilt as townhomes and apartments, alleys behind some streets and long straight runs that the van covers in eighteen minutes.

The south-west quarter of the city between Hesperian Boulevard and the bay: ranch houses on wide flat streets, older houses on the lanes that were here before the tracts, the shops and yards along Industrial Boulevard, and a run of twenty-six minutes from Jackson Street that is longer when Winton is backed up.

Tennyson Road and the blocks around Southgate and South Hayward BART: two- and three-story apartment blocks, fourplexes on the side streets, courtyards with a gate and a buzzer panel, carports at the back, unit numbers that do not follow the street, and the largest share of renters in the city.

The streets climbing above Cal State East Bay and the blocks of Fairway Park below them: larger houses on cut lots, side gates onto steep drives, detached garages and workshops behind the house, decks and lower doors on the downhill side, and the longest run on the map.

The west edge of the city past I-880: townhome rows near the marsh and the Eden Greenway, warehouses and light industry on the wide streets, the businesses around Hayward Executive Airport, gated yards, roll-up doors and long fences, twenty-eight minutes out Winton Avenue across I-880.
