Smart Lock Installation in Hayward by Eden Locksmith
1You say which door it is and what it is doing; the figure comes back on the call.
2The van leaves Jackson Street and a text names the technician and a thirty-minute window.
3The lock is opened without damage wherever it allows, and the receipt carries the figure from the call.

A smart lock is usually bought for somebody who is not the buyer. The kids who get home from Chabot or the high school before either parent does. The caregiver who comes to a Mt. Eden ranch house three mornings a week. The cleaner who needs Thursday and no other day. The owner of a Jackson Triangle duplex who would rather change a code from the sofa than drive across town with a key. A tenant on Tennyson tired of buzzing a partner in every evening. Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, August, Level and Lockly all ride on the Eden Locksmith van, including the retrofit models that keep your existing deadbolt and your existing key in the door.

A motor cannot lean on a door the way a shoulder can, so the first twenty minutes go into the strike. The bolt has to run home with no drag at all, because a bolt that scrapes drains batteries and quits on a school morning. Only then does the lock go on the door. Where the model allows, its cylinder is pinned to the key already on your ring so nothing else in the house has to change. The app goes on your phone rather than the technician's, and the first codes are entered while you stand there. Wi-Fi gets measured at the door itself, which matters in older Hayward houses where the router sits in a back bedroom two lath-and-plaster walls away; a plug-in bridge closes that gap when the signal is short. Detached garages and back units almost always need one. On a door with old mortise hardware the original set stays and a smart deadbolt goes above it, so nothing gets cut into that cannot be undone.

Smart lock installation is $169 to $429, the $89 service call counted in. At $169 it is labor on a lock you already bought, going onto a door prepared for it. At $429 the lock is supplied, or a bridge is added, or a handleset and deadbolt go on together, or a smart bolt is fitted above old mortise hardware. The clock does not run against you: a slow firmware update or a pairing that argues for twenty minutes changes nothing on the receipt. Evening and overnight additions apply as they do everywhere, $45 and $80, counted into the figure named on the call.

You call and say what happened or what you want: which lock you own or are considering, and whether the door carries a modern deadbolt or an older mortise set. The figure is said on the call. The van leaves Jackson Street, and a text names the technician and gives a thirty-minute window. Strike first, then mounting, keying, pairing, first codes, signal check. Before the technician packs up you add a code and delete one yourself, with whoever else uses the door watching, and the receipt shows the figure from the call.

We rent a townhome near the marsh and our landlord said yes to a keypad as long as nothing was cut into the door. $259 for the lock and the coding. It went on without a new hole anywhere, the original deadbolt went into a box for the end of the lease, and he set three separate codes for us, the dog walker and the owner. The receipt went to me and a copy to the landlord without my having to ask a second time.

FAQ

Smart Lock Installation: quick answers

I rent and my lease says the outside of the door cannot be changed. Is a smart lock still possible?+

Yes, with a retrofit unit. Models from August, Level and others replace the thumbturn on the inside face and nothing else; from the walkway the door looks exactly as it did, the cylinder is untouched, and the key your manager holds still works. When you move out the original thumbturn goes back on in ten minutes and the lock comes with you. Send your manager a photo of the inside face before you buy, and the answer usually comes back yes.

I own two units and turnover keeps costing me a rekey. Does a smart lock end that?+

It reduces it rather than ending it. Deleting the old code and adding a new one takes a minute and costs nothing, so ordinary turnovers stop needing a visit. Keep the mechanical key on your own ring for a dead battery, and have the cylinder repinned every few years anyway, because a metal key is the one credential a lock cannot switch off. Most owners also set the lock to notify them when the cleaners arrive on turnover day.

Our house in the Highlands has the router at the back and the front door is a long way from it. Will a Wi-Fi lock reach?+

Often not on its own, which is why the reading is taken at the door before the lock is fitted rather than after. A plug-in bridge near the entry solves it in most houses of that size. Some models talk over Thread or Bluetooth to a hub you already own, and where that is the case the bridge is neither fitted nor charged for.

The van is already in town, and the number comes before it moves

Hayward, San Lorenzo, Cherryland and Ashland, San Leandro, Castro Valley and Union City, 24/7, holidays included. Describe the door, hear one number with the $89 visit inside it, and the lock gets opened without damage wherever it can be. The receipt says what the call said. It runs the same way whether the lease is in your name or the deed is.
